สงครามสร้างความหายนะกับหลาย ๆ ชีวิตในหมู่บ้านเล็ก ๆ ห่างไกลความเจริญหมู่บ้านหนึ่ง เด็กสาวต้องทิ้งครอบครัว และเอาชีวิตรอด อันเป็นภาระที่หนักอึ้งที่ต้องเผชิญก่อนวัย ของตนเอง การผจญภัยที่เกินความคาดหมาย ทำให้เด็กหญิง ต้องโตก่อนวัยอันสมควร จากชีวิตสุขสงบในหมู่บ้านเล็ก ๆ สู่ ชุมชมเมืองทีวุ่นวาย
แนวคิด
Blood Song เป็นภาพยนตร์ชีวิต (Drama) ที่เป็นหนังเงียบ โดยใช้การคุมสีโทนขาว-ดำ เพื่อเล่าเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับชีวิตของ หญิงสาวที่เผชิญกับความสูญเสียจากสงครามจากประเทศศิ วิไลซ์ ภาพยนตร์เงียบเรื่องนี้บอกเล่าวัฏจักรความจริงของชีวิต การเติบโต ความรัก การสูญเสีย การอยู่รอด และการเกิด การสื่อสารด้วยภาพโดยไม่ใช่เสียงเป็นภาษาสากลที่ทำให้เรื่อง ราวทั้งหมดสามารถถูกถ่ายทอดไปยังผู้ชมกลุ่มใหญ่
ซาติสตูดิโอได้นำเสนอภาพยนตร์ในรูปแบบใหม่ ในลักษณะสร้างสรรค์ ที่ต่างจากรูปแบบเดิมๆ โดยการใช้เทคนิคอนิเมชั่นผสมไลฟ์ แอคชั่นเพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับนิยายภาพต้นฉบับ ตามต้นแบบ ของศิลปินผู้ประพันธ์ โดยการสื่อสารเนื้อหาของบทประพันธ์ที่มีความน่าสนใจ นอกจากภาพยนตร์ได้สะท้อนถึงผลกระทบของสงครามแล้ว ยังกระตุ้นความเท่าเทียมกันในสังคม ทั้งในแง่ ของเชื้อชาติ ศาสนา และวัฒนธรรม อีกทั้งกระตุ้นการสร้างความตระหนักรู้ถึงอคติ อารมณ์ ความรู้สึกของเพื่อนร่วมโลกอีกด้วย
Eric Drooker’s graphic novel, Blood Song gave me insight into the lives that were changed by the brutality of the Vietnam War. In 2014 in San Francisco, CA, Eric Drooker gave a talk titled, “The Art of Animating: Howl” where he spoke of his experience as the animation concept artist for the movie “Howl”. I was astonished by Mr. Drooker’s creative process as well as his use of wood cut style in his graphic novels. Mostly, his graphic novels illustrates the kinds of loneliness sufferings we as human beings inflict on each other, this rang especially true in his two graphic novels: Blood Song and Flood. The sophistication of his artistry and storytelling gift makes it possible to viscerally experience his work without a single written word. The layering of various social issues reminds us of how complex life can be, and how using brutal tactics to overpower each other makes life complicated in ways that life is suffering. Within Eric Drooker’s strikingly harsh view of the world, there is a kind of beauty that emerges from the human spirit. Though Blood Song is harsh in nature, the strength, determination, and struggle of the young girl offers a kind of humanity that lingers. And it is that humanity that I want to bring to film. Having had the opportunity to meet with Eric Drooker, and explaining to him why I want adapt Blood Song into a film, he generously gave me permission.
Blood Song is about a young girl and her survival after she escaped the war in Vietnam. The story explores the surreal experience of having to uproot and leave everything familiar in order to survive. As the main character moves from child to woman, she also experiences love and lost. The story is illustrated, offering detailed black and white drawings without having a single word. Blood Song was influenced by the brutality of Vietnam war and the artist’s own experience of living in lower east side New York city.
I understand Blood Song as a kind of transition of the main character's life. She goes from her first menstruation, which shows the growth of life. To then, the massacre of her family members, which shows the lost of loved ones. To being alone in a boat and having to survive by killing a bird with her hands. To giving birth, which shows the continuation of the life cycle. With every life’s event marked by bleeding blood, we are reminded of the kinds of sacrifices and gains that are made in life.
To depict such tragedy, Eric Drooker used surrealism as a method to move us from one moment to another. This offers an affect that gives us a kind of gut wrenching feeling– we know it happened, but we can’t imagine ourselves surviving it. The movement from Vietnam, to New York city happened in a single moment, the character is transported from what she knows to something that is alien. This is a story not about War, but it is about how a girl goes beyond fear to find hope, justice and liberation.
This film will be a silent ballad, keeping true to the great work of Eric Drooker. I am passionate in adapting Blood Song into a cinematic experience because it is my goal to give voice to innocent people. Most movies about the Vietnam War is about who caused the war, who is right or wrong, or what is the greater impact of the war. Blood Song, different from other War stories, shows us that the root of all anger is fear. It is self-conscience of the social issues of its time, and ours, such as racism, police brutality, and the injustice in war. For me, experiencing the Vietnam War through the life of young girl allows for us to explore the delicate nature of what it is to be a person. It allows the audience to empathize with the victims of the war, bringing us right into the cruelty of we experience from loss– it reminds us of our own humanity. Blood Song gives us an opportunity to better understand ourselves as a society and as individuals, and perhaps we can realize that all the brutality that we inflict on each other starts with a negative thought that turns into fear and then into hatred. If we know this, we can stop it.
My vision for Blood Song the film is that it will keep to the story structure of the original graphic novel. It will be a live action, silent film with some animation. In order to keep to the surreal imagery of the graphic novel, we will utilize body paint, animated background, and neat composite. The combination of real and surreal will help in conveying the message of the brutality of war, by allowing space for the audience to empathize as well as realize. Emotions and feelings of the story will be told through combined art too. Traditional Thai and Asian contemporary dancing will allow the actors to offer a physicality that is expressive of the narrative. Lighting, sound, and occasional colors are for strengthening the vividness of the overall expression in the movie.
This movie is a real challenge to me because it takes me beyond my comfort level with my artistic and technical skills. I am so excited to narrate the story through my own interpretations and original methods. My engagement with Blood Song really pushes me into new heights as a filmmaker.
